The Joint Commission, with funding from The Commonwealth Fund, is developing proposed accreditation requirements for hospitals to advance effective communication, cultural competence, and patient-centered care. Under the direction of Paul Schyve, MD and Amy Wilson-Stronks, MPP, this 18-month project will increase national attention to cultural competence, highlight its intersection with patient- centered care, and improve the safety and quality of care for all patients.

  • The project explores how diversity, culture , language, and health literacy issues can be better incorporated into current Joint Commission standards or drafted into new requirements.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR CALIFORNIA NURSES: Effective Monday, August 10, 2009 The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) will not issue a Temporary License or Interim Permit until the processing of fingerprints is completed by the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and have notified the BRN of the results. This will result in no Temporary Licenses or Interim Permits being issued at the counter, unless the processing of fingerprints have been completed. The BRN is sorry for any inconvenience that this might cause.

All applicants for licensure (examination or endorsement) are required to complete and submit one (1) set of fingerprints to the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).

The BRN submits the fingerprints to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) either by Live Scan or on an Applicant Fingerprint Card (Hard Card). The complete instructions for submittal of fingerprint cards or Live Scan service is included in the application packet.

Pursuant to the Governor's Executive Order S-13-09, beginning in August 2009, the Board office will be closed the first, second, and third Friday of each month until July 1, 2010.
